Sweet and sour tofu is one of my favorite dishes to order at a Thai restaurant. I guess it’s the combination of the pineapple, vegetables, and tangy sauce that makes me crave this dish all the time. When I realized today I had fresh pineapple, green peppers, onions, and seitan in the fridge, I knew I had to come up with my own version of sweet and sour.

It may not be traditional, but it sure is good!
Sweet and Sour Seitan
- 1/4 cup ketchup
- 1/4 cup water
- 2 tablespoons maple syrup
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons vinegar
- 1 tablespoon olive oil or other favorite oil
- a few sprinkles of garlic powder
- 1 package of seitan, cut into thick slices (I used homemade from this recipe)
- 2-3 cups fresh assorted veggies of choice, chopped (I used green and orange peppers, onions, and celery since it was what I had in the fridge)
- 1-2 cups fresh pineapple, chopped
- salt and pepper to taste
In a small bowl, whisk together the first 7 ingredients and set aside. This will be your “sweet and sour” sauce. In a lightly oiled skillet, cook seitan over medium heat until lightly browned. Remove seitan from pan, and cook veggies until slighty tender. Add the pineapple to the veggies and cook for another minute or two.
Finally add the seitan back to the pan, and toss to combine with veggies and pineapple. Slowly pour sweet and sour sauce into the pan and gently toss to coat. Lower the heat and allow to simmer on low for a few minutes. Add salt and pepper to taste and dig in!

Serve over brown rice or quinoa or eat straight up like I did. This was so easy and delicious. The seitan absorbed the sweet and sour sauce and was really flavorful.

It definitely took care of my Thai food craving right away.
Let me know if you try it!

Jessie, that looks soooo good. Holy professional Thai Food Dish! And i LOVE pineapple in savory applications…yum!
I am going to bookmark this recipe. My boyfriend and I love to eat ethnic food and this one sounds great! If we get around to making it soon, I will tell you how it turns out.
Does seitan taste like tofu? Haha, I’ve never had either, but this dish looks delicious! I could be talked into it.
Seitan doesn’t taste anything like tofu, and it has a much more “meaty” texture. You should try it!
Looks fabulous! Nice home creation of takeout- love doing that. Any fun weekend plans??
I’ve yet to try seitan– I really want to make it myself! I’m going to bookmark your recipe!
That looks delicious! I need to make seitan- I’ve used the packaged kind, but never made my own. Thanks for this recipe!
Yum! Even though we made Pad Siew last night, I could eat this for dinner! I need to check out that seitan recipe! We have been talking about making our own!
This sounds delicious! I’d love to try it with tofu(seitan is a gluten-filled product, right? I seem to remember trying some and having it not sit well with me)
Evan, seitan is definitely filled with wheat gluten. I have heard of a few people that have had problems digesting it.
wow, you’re so creative! this looks absolutely delicious and i love how you just simply try what ever suits your fancy. being able to improvise in the kitchen is definitely a skill. how much of the seitan from the ppk’s recipe did you use? i’m definitely bookmarking this
have a lovely day!
xox
Thanks!
I used the whole batch of seitan, but the recipe would definitely work with less than that.
This look AMAZING!!
I really really disliked the taste of seitan… boo…

I love seitan, it’s my favorite meat substitute. Totally trumps tofu in texture. This recipe and dish looks incredible!
